Qatar Urges Diplomacy and Calm in Talks with Iranian FM

(MENAFN) Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, called for stronger efforts to reduce tensions in the region during a phone conversation Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to reports, Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Doha’s “full” backing for diplomatic initiatives aimed at reaching a broad agreement to resolve the ongoing dispute between the United States and Iran.

The Qatari official also stressed the importance of constructive engagement from all sides involved in mediation efforts in order to secure long-term peace and stability across the region.

"Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle that is not open to compromise," the minister said, stressing that closing the Strait of Hormuz or "using it as a bargaining chip will only deepen the crisis and jeopardize the vital interests of the countries of the region."

He additionally urged all parties to adhere to international law, maintain good neighborly relations, and place the interests and welfare of regional populations above political disputes.

Regional tensions have continued to rise since military strikes launched by the US and Israel against Iran earlier this year. Reports stated that Tehran later responded with attacks targeting Israel, Gulf-based US allies, and by shutting down the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect on April 8, but negotiations held afterward in Islamabad reportedly failed to secure a permanent settlement. Reports added that US President Donald Trump later announced an indefinite extension of the truce.
