Erdogan Joins Trump-Led Regional Call on Iran Diplomacy, Gulf Stability
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated in a teleconference early Sunday with US President Donald Trump and several regional leaders to discuss developments involving Iran and broader Middle East tensions, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.
The call reportedly included participation from leaders across the Gulf and wider region, including Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, along with members of the US Cabinet.
The discussion followed remarks attributed to President Trump indicating that an agreement with Iran aimed at reducing conflict had been largely negotiated, pending final confirmation.
Erdogan reportedly welcomed the progress in diplomatic efforts, noting that the process had advanced to a significant stage. He also emphasized that any prospective agreement ensuring safe and unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would contribute to regional stability.
He reaffirmed that Türkiye is prepared to support the implementation of any potential accord with Tehran and reiterated Ankara’s preference for resolving regional disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation.
According to reports, Erdogan stressed the importance of establishing a regional order where states do not view one another as threats, describing a “just peace” as one that would produce no losers.
He further stated that Türkiye continues to support diplomatic solutions to complex regional issues, including concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, and believes that sustained negotiation can eventually yield workable outcomes.
Separately, reports indicate that the US and Iran have been engaging in indirect negotiations through intermediaries, focusing on issues such as maritime access in the Strait of Hormuz, nuclear constraints, and potential sanctions relief.
