Mass grave unearthed in Bashar al-Assad government security building
The discovery occurred during renovation work at the building, which previously served as the State Security headquarters in Maaret al-Numan before the Assad government lost control of the city in 2019. Human remains were reportedly found buried within the structure, prompting an immediate halt to the renovation.
Authorities have sealed off the area and restricted access while further investigations are conducted. No official information has been released regarding the number of bodies or their identities.
The finding adds to a pattern of mass grave discoveries in Syria. Following the capture of Damascus by a coalition led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Al-Qaeda offshoot, at least 66 mass graves have been identified across the country. These sites may hold crucial information about the fate of some of the more than 170,000 individuals still missing. In December, a mass grave outside Damascus was reported to contain at least 100,000 bodies.
