Ex-Adviser Claims Israel Escalated US-Iran Tensions and Undermined Diplomacy

(MENAFN) A former foreign policy adviser has argued that Israel has significantly damaged prospects for US-Iran diplomacy by pushing actions that escalated tensions between the two countries.

In an interview, James Webb, a former adviser linked to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and a Marine Corps veteran, claimed that the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the outset of the US-Israeli campaign marked a major turning point. He described the incident as inconsistent with traditional US military and diplomatic practice and suggested it reflected an external planning approach influencing the conflict.

Webb further alleged that the development undermined diplomatic channels by transforming the situation into what he described as a deep and emotionally charged confrontation between states, rather than a negotiable political dispute.

He also referenced reporting indicating that Israeli leadership had been present in high-level US discussions prior to the escalation, suggesting close coordination between the two sides during key decision-making moments.

The remarks come amid ongoing uncertainty over US-Iran negotiations, with reports of planned talks remaining unconfirmed by Tehran. Earlier rounds of discussions held in Pakistan reportedly failed to produce a breakthrough, while tensions in the region have continued to rise.

Webb also suggested that decision-making within the US administration may be influenced by competing internal pressures and external interests, arguing that this affects the clarity of policy direction.

The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts, military actions, and regional tensions continuing to intersect as negotiations remain unresolved.
