Malta’s Labour Party Secures Fourth Straight Term in Government
Although Labour retained control of the government, figures gathered by the country's two main political parties suggested the winning margin may have fallen below 19,000 votes, indicating a stronger performance by the opposition than in previous elections.
Following the result, Abela described the victory as a success for the entire nation and pledged to move forward with the implementation of his administration’s policy agenda.
"Today's result is a historic fourth win," Abela said, while calling for unity and encouraging supporters to celebrate responsibly.
Opposition leader Alex Borg acknowledged the defeat and congratulated Abela, but argued that the campaign represented a turning point for his party.
Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg conceded defeat and congratulated Abela, but said the campaign had marked "the rebirth of something beautiful" for his party.
"You should never be embarrassed for wanting change," Borg told supporters in a message shared on social media, adding that the opposition would continue its efforts moving forward.
Voters elected the 65 members of House of Representatives of Malta for a five-year term. Abela had called the election ahead of schedule, arguing that Malta required political stability amid growing global uncertainty.
The outcome extends Labour’s time in power and gives Abela a renewed mandate to govern the Mediterranean island nation for another term.
