Government joins President Cyril Ramaphosa in extending its deepest condolences to families and communities affected by the tragic killing of women in and around Kempton Park.

President Ramaphosa declared the murders as a national crisis and instructed that the investigation receive the highest level of attention from government and law enforcement. A multidisciplinary specialised team around the clock to identify and apprehend those responsible.

As this work continues, it is important to recognise that building safer communities is a shared responsibility. Creating safer neighbourhoods where criminal activity cannot thrive requires a collaborative effort between law enforcement, individuals, local authorities, schools, business and civil society.

Communities should make use of established structures such as Community Police Forums, neighbourhood watches and other community safety initiatives, and work closely with the South African Police Service and local authorities.

This means communities must remain vigilant about the activities occurring around them and report suspicious behaviour to the police. These could include the peddling and use of illicit drugs, illegal firearms, gender-based violence and femicide, abuse of children and the elderly, vandalism, and other illegal activities that undermines the rule of law.

Residents are encouraged to know their neighbours, and assist the vulnerable members of the community, particularly the elderly and women and children. If you see something, speak out. Do not look away. Every person can contribute to make neighbourhoods safe by reporting crime and supporting those that are at risk.

By working together, remaining vigilant and supporting law enforcement, communities can help prevent crime, protect one another and create neighbourhoods where women, children and all residents can live safely.  

Government urges anyone with information that may assist the investigation into the Kempton Park killings to report it to the South African Police Service and to avoid sharing unverified information that could compromise the investigation or cause further distress to affected families.
